Deathmas Day Two: Old-School Death Metal

I could be a lazy fuck and use the same introduction I used yesterday... but I'm afraid some of you may not know it. The idea is the same. Since we're approaching the 1 year mark (it might be today, I don't know), I thought it'd be nice to make two big posts for both Christmas days. Today we're dealing with the Old-School side of Death, since yesterday I finished the subgenres.

.1: The Autopsy Chapter
Autopsy have a certain style of rotting Death metal mixed with Doom moments that got me since the first time I listened to them. I know most of you will probably be dissapointed that Mental Funeral isn't here, but I simply haven't listened to it yet. Anyway, these two records have the same style as the other albums I posted a while ago, so enjoy.

1. Autopsy - Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves

2. Autopsy - Skull Grinder

.2: The Grave Chapter
Grave is another band I haven't touched until recently, but when I heard these two albums I knew I had to post them here. In my opinion, Out Of Respect For The Dead is a bit better than Into The Grave, but both are great.

3. Grave - Into The Grave

4. Grave - Out Of Respect For The Dead

.3: The Echelon Chapter
When you put together 5 Death metal masters and have them assembly line music, what can go wrong? In this case, absolutely nothing. These two albums are unbelievably good, the great solos being the ones that stand out thye most.

5. Echelon - Indulgence over Abstinence Behind the Obsidian Veil

6. Echelon - The Brimstone Aggrandizement

.4: The Random Chapter

7. Obituary - World Demise
Have you ever listened to Obituary? If you have, you mostly know what lies under World Demise's artwork. This album is a very fast and furious record, featuring some weird-ass effects and an outro I still can't fully explain.

Obituary - World Demise

8. Asphyx - The Rack
Incoming Death is definetly one of the best albums released in 2016, and the band's debut record brings back everything you loved here. It's all here, the fast Death parts, the rotting Doom moments, the brilliant vocals, the great songs, all morphing into the majestically brytalo storm that is Asphyx.

Asphyx - The Rack

.5: The Similar Chapter
To be honest, I've worked my mind for the past days trying to figure out something special about each album in this chapter, but all I managed to find was ONE defining quality for all these albums, and that is being incredible OSDM albums. Anyway, I figured it would be a bit boring for you to read that 7 times until the end of the article, so I filed them all under this criteria.

9. Entombed - Clandestine

10. Avulsed - Eminence in Putrescence

11. Sentient Horror - Ungodly Forms

12. Massacre - From Beyond

13. Vader - Welcome to the Morbid Reich

14. Benediction - The Grand Leveller

15. Deteriorot - In Ancient Beliefs

Merry Christmas, you filthy animals. And a happy New Year.

Deathmas Day One: Death Metal Subgenres

No matter how dead inside you are, Christmas is pretty special. I mean it. And even if this year nothing will probably make me feel less cold (maybe except the warm feel of shots), that doesn't mean we can't be a bit festive about Metal Hut finally hitting 1 year. I know I haven't been consistent in posting, and this new format probably doesn't please everybody, but fuck it.
This Christmas I'm focusing solely on Death and Death alone, and today you're getting albums that belong to subgenreslike Brutal DM, TechDeath, MeloDeath or Progressive DM.

.1: The Children of Bodom Chapter
Since we're rapidly approaching the 1 year anniversary, I figured this should be mostly about about bands I tragically neglected in the past. The clearest of this examples are Finnish masters, Children of Bodom. Definetly my favourite MeloDeath band in the roster, their only competition being Amon Amarth or Insomnium.

1. Children of Bodom - Something Wild

2. Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder

3. Children of Bodom - Follow The Reaper

4. Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll

5. Children of Bodom - Halo of Blood

6. Children of Bodom - I Worship Chaos

.2: The Obscura Chapter
It was about time to finish these guys' discography, wasn't it?! Obscura definetly destroy most of the competition when it comes to TechDeath. Right now, I can't really think of another group that brings so many amazing things to the table. Even if Akróasis is still my favourite, there's no question when it comes to the greatness of these two albums.

7. Obscura - Retribution
(I like the remastered artwork better)

8. Obscura - Cosmogenesis

.3: The Carcass Chapter
If you ever found yourself wondering where were Carcass's Necroticism and Heartwork, don't worry, they simply weren't here. Until now! Honestly, I have no idea how I managed to avoid listening to these two after I fell in love with Surgical Steel. It's taken me a long time, but here I am. Both are very good, but my heart still belongs to Surgical Steel. Way more catchy.

9. Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious

10. Carcass - Heartwork

.4: The Random Chapter

11. At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Slaughter of the Soul is often said to be the album that gave birth to metalcore, but that doesn't mean it isn't great. Fuck, it's such a classic that most of you must know it already. So stop reading and just download it. Only question is how did I get so far without listening to it...

At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul

12. Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Back here, where I'm slowly building up to Opeth's full discography. Ghost Reveries is probably theirs best known album, maybe second only to Blackwater Park. The whole record can be summed up in the first and most beloved song here, Ghost of Perdition: brutal and beautiful at the same time.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries

13. Cryptopsy - None So Vile
The old TechDeath classic, which, again you all know. If I really work m mind, I can find a downside. When I describe Death metal to my non-metal friends, I call the vocals "grohi-groh". Yeah, the vocals are only grohi-groh on this album and it can get old quickly. But, aside from that, killer record.

Cryptopsy - None So Vile

14. Necrovile - Engorging the Devourmental Void
Necrovile is one of my latest prides, but also one of my latest regrets. I love them because they are another band that help put Romania on the map when it comes to top-notch Brutal DM, but I feel ashamed because I haven't given them enough attention until now. Since they are coming to REF next year, any romanian deather owes it to himself to listen to Engorging the Devourmental Void.

Necrovile - Engorging the Devourmental Void

15. Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Unquestionable Presence is an experience. Everything on this album is beyond crazy good. Every member's talent is on full display thanks to the way this album sounds. Every song is an A+. I'm lost for words when thinking about this record. The way I felt when I first heard it was similar to listening to Cealta parte, which you may know is, to this day, my favourite Romanian album.

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence

Deathgiving

November is one the busiest months in my year, but I've done my best to prepare a very wide selection of albums for you. Of course, this post will focus mainly on Death albums, but I can't go over this without covering Testament's Brotherhood Of The Snake. Anyway, I have discovered a lot of new stuff, so let's get ROOOOIIIIGGGHT into the metal.

.1: The Master/Paul Speckmann Chapter
Sure, Paul Speckmann is constantly teasing me with all his merch pics on Facebook, but this guy has been present in great Death bands and produced some amazing albums. Yes, maybe most of his albums follow the same rules, maybe you can merge them all into one big playlist and not be able to guess which is which, but... what's the problem with that? That means more old-school, excellent Death.

1. Master - The Human Machine

2. Master - The New Elite

3. Master - The Witchhunt

4. Johansson & Sleckmann - Edge Of The Abyss

5. Cadaveric Poison - Cadaveric Poison

.2: The Immolation Chapter
Man, was I dumb for not checking Immolation's albums earlier. They have really grown on me in the last month, and the more albums of theirs I listened to, the more I knew I had to dedicate a chunk of this post to them.

6. Immolation - Here In After

7. Immolation - Close to a World Below

8. Immolation - Unholy Cult

9. Immolation - Majesty And Decay

.3: The Nile Chapter
Nile have been throwing the brutalest of the brutal death metal around for a lot of time, and I just started listening to them. To be honest, the first time I pressed play on "Black Seeds Of Vengeance", I felt it was a bit too crushing even for me.

10. Nile - Black Seeds Of Vengeance

11. Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked

12. Nile - What Should Not Be Unearthed

.4: The Random Chapter

13. Vader - The Empire
Vader are still one of my favourite Death metal bands, and luckily for me, there's a lot of material to choose from. They combine Thrash and Death without a problem and their newest album comes with some Star Wars easter eggs, a first time for them.

Vader - The Empire

14. Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Pestilence's Consuming Impulse is quite an acquaintance of mine, since I've seen it so often on top of "Best Death Metal Albums" lists (I gotta get new music from SOMEWHERE!). Having finally listened to it, I think it ight be a bit overrated, but not by much, My feelings towards it are similar to the ones towards Left Hand Path.

Pestilence - Consuming Impulse

15. Obituary - Ten Thousand Ways To Die
I've posted some of Obituary's albums, so they are scattered among the site. What you should understand from this is that Obituary aren't first timers in my playlist or on Metal Hut. Their latest record combines most of their best songs (played live) and 2 new ones, making it very enjoyable for both new and old fans.

Obituary - Ten Thousand Ways To Die

16. Sothoth - Rise To Conquer
Sothoth's record is one I can't really cathegorise into the subgenres of Death. I'm not sure if it's Technical, Brutal or Old-School, but I'm sure it's very good. It hasn't hit as close to home as other albums on this list though.

Sothoth - Rise To Conquer

17. Gorguts - The Erosion Of Sanity
Gorguts must be one of the most criminally underrated TechDeath bands in metal history. I came across this album by accident, but unlike my birth, it was a happy one. I still consider Pleiades' Dust to be the superior album, but this one is amazing too.

Gorguts - The Erosion Of Sanity

18. Avulsed - Ritual Zombi
If you're from Spain, you probably know Avulsed. If you're not, let me fill you in. Probably the oldest Death band in Spain, they have a lot of albums, but the only one I have is this one. Still, it's very good, so it's here.

Avulsed - Ritual Zombi

19. Nekrogoblikon - Heavy Meta
Nekrogobikon is a very strange band. They remind me of Dirty Shirt (HERE, boys and girls) if they abandoned Nu Metal and started blasting MeloDeath. Their music is fun and very enjoyable, but words aren't of much use when trying to describe it... you'll have to trust me on this one.

Nekrogoblikon - Heavy Meta

.5: The Dark Descent Albums Chapter
For those not into this, Dark Descent Records (HERE and HERE) is a new label I found, and it has made me listen to 4 of the best Death albums I've heard in a while. To thank them for this, I dedicated one of the chapters to them.

20. Ruinous - Graves of Ceaseless Death

21. Blood Incarnation - Starspawn

22. Ghoulgotha - The Deathmass Cloak

23. Ghoulgotha - To Starve The Cross

.6: The Thrash Chapter

24. Testament - Brotherhood Of The Snake
It's been around a month since Testament's new record hit my ears, and I've had time to let it sink in. In the end, the songs are very good, Chuck Billy's vocals still make any Thrash fan to blow a load in his pants, but I consider 2016's Thrash masterpieces like Decision Day or Dystopia to be a bit more memorable.

Testament - Brotherhood Of The Snake

25. Metallica - Hardwired... To Self-Destruct
I feel a bit sorry for Metallica fans that have waited for Hardwired for 8 years... shit, that's almost half my age. I think Hardired is very good at best and okay at worst, since I like most of the songs (except Halo Of Fire or ManUNkind). Also, I find the Iron Maiden, Motorhead and Mayhem references to be a very cool thing for a band as big as fuckin' Metallica to do.

Metallica - Hardwired... To Self-Destruct

And that cocludes this post. I'm sorry it came a bit late and that my writing maybe hasn't been as sharp as ever, but I'm approaching the end of a tiresome week and all I want is some good sleep. Hope these albums make what's left of November better for you.
